The Birth Story

Abram's birth story:

Stephen and I went into the hospital on Wednesday, October 10 at 10:00 pm to get induced. They started some of the medication to soften my cervix at night. Throughout the night the medicine would be given to me in 3 dosages in hopes that by the third dose, my cervix would be soft so I would start dilating. My doctor came in at 9:00 am on the 11th to see if I had progressed any over night. Well I did not. The medicine did not do its job. So she decided to go ahead and break my water to help things along. At some point in the morning the contractions began. The contractions were so hard and fast, with little breaks in between each one. I have never been in so much pain in my entire life. My doctor came back in after lunch to check on me and I had finally dilated to barely a 2 and only 60% effaced. I could not be given pitocin to help things along because I was contracting on my own, but not dilating. I decided to go ahead and get an epidural about 2:00 pm, because I was in so much pain and tears were flowing with each contraction, that I could not do it on my own. At 3:45, my doctor came in to check on me again and I had not progressed from the earlier check. She also felt the baby's head swelling from pushing down on my pelvis. She looked at Stephen and I and said we have a choice to make. We can either have a c-section (which would be the healthier option) or try and have a vaginal delivery, but she did not recommend that option by the ways things were going. There was no way the baby was going to fit through my pelvis and at this point the baby was being harmed. So Stephen and I looked at each other and decided c-section was the way to go. After that decision was made, I was getting wheeled down to the operating room about 15 minutes later after receiveing a higher dosage of the epidural medicine to fully numb me. Once in the operating room I was falling asleep and could barely concentrate on what was happening. All of a sudden they were starting the procedure. Next thing I know they are saying he is born and I hear this sweet cry filling the room. Stephen then got to go see him while they were finishing up the procedure. Finally Stephen brought Abram over to see me and I was so happy to finally see him. I will always remember seeing him for the first time. Then I went into the recovery room for an hour. In the recovery room was when I got to hold Abram for the first time. Having him in my arms was well worth the pain I went threw. Recovering from the c-section has been hard but it gets better each day.
